Consumer Unit Replacement
Consumer units can need replacing for various reasons. This can be where the existing consumer unit does not
meet current day standards as set out in the wiring regulations BS7671. For example, where there is no RCD
protection or to allow extra circuits to be added. It may be that a replacement of the unit has been a
recommendation, following a electrical installation condition report. Or it could be that the existing consumer
unit is in poor condition.
Your consumer unit, more commonly known as a “fuse board”, in a domestic house, is the main safety device,
of the electrical system in your property. And as such it should only be replaced or upgraded by a fully qualified
and registered electrician.
All modern consumer units should incorporate advanced protective devices such as:·
• RCD’s for protection against electric shock
• Circuit breakers (MCBs) for the protection of the cable and the property
• Surge protection devices to protect your electronic equipment.
